  2.          THE STORY SO FAR

  5. Once upon a time there was a boxer 
  6. dog called Punch.  He was a good   
  7. dog and a loving dog.  He even     
  8. liked cats! He had only one fault. 
  9. He slimed!                         
  10.                                    
  11. His family put up with the mess for
  12. years and even got used to wearing 
  13. macs wellies and sou'westers all   
  14. the time but in the end it all     
  15. became too much.                   
  16.                                    
  17. The neighbours got up a petition to
  18. have Punch destroyed - all because 
  19. he accidentally drowned next door's
  20. poodle in a pool of slime.  He had 
  21. only been licking it but no-one    
  22. believed him.

  26. Ofcourse his family could not bring
  27. themselves to do such a dastardly  
  28. deed and so they dug Punch a secret
  29. underground kennel and lowered him 
  30. down with his bean bag and squeaky 
  31. duck to live out his life in peace.
  32. At least they lowered his favourite
  33. food dried tripe down in a bucket  
  34. twice a day.                             
  35.                                    
  36. Unbeknown to all however the kennel
  37. was next to an underground sewer   
  38. which in turn ran past the dump of 
  39. a long-abandoned nuclear research  
  40. station.                           
  41. Maybe the walls of Punch's kennel  
  42. leaked a little and perhaps he     
  43. lapped up some drops of radioactive
  44. water.  Whatever it was something  
  45. caused the slime animalcules to    
  46. change.

  50. The micro-organisms mutated into a 
  51. fast-breeding and virulent strain. 
  52. They fed on the sewage and grew    
  53. rapidly soon filling the drains and
  54. spreading to the nearby town of    
  55. Collars.                           
  56.                                    
  57. The normally tranquil inhabitants  
  58. of Collars were terrified to see   
  59. this awful green ooze welling up   
  60. out of manholes and drain-covers   
  61. and soon it was declared a health  
  62. hazard.                            
  63.                                    
  64. Something had to be done!          
  65.                                    
  66. Professor Josephus Latham Punch's  
  67. owner invented the SLIME-COMPACTOR 
  68. an extraordinary machine which was 
  69. able to suck up the slime and com- 
  70. press it ready for incineration.

  74. Your job as the SLIME-COMPACTOR    
  75. operator is to clear the slime from
  76. whichever cities it spreads to.    
  77. You must be quick for if it is left
  78. too long it might mutate into even 
  79. more virulent forms.               
  80.                                    
  81. To help you as well as the SLIME   
  82. COMPACTOR you can blast it away    
  83. with carefully placed bombs and    
  84. plug its means of escape from the  
  85. drains - but be quick for who knows
  86. what its final form may be.        
  87.                                    
  88. Only when all the slime is erased  
  89. will Punch be forgiven and be able 
  90. to emerge from his underground     
  91. prison and return to his loving    
  92. family.
